2009 Battle Creek Field of Flight Airshow & Balloon Festival-
It's almost time to cover one of the greatest events that we cover each year...the Field of Flight Entertainment Festival in Battle Creek, Michigan. Being under 20 minutes away from our headquarters, this event is considered our "home" event, and we just have a blast covering it.
The staff & volunteers at this event are so friendly and want to make sure that everything goes off without a hitch and wants to take care of all spectators equally and not just cater to one specific group. This can be seen with the countless different activities that they have, everyone has something to do while there. Also, compared to other events of its kind, they allow coolers in the gate so you don't have to spend money on the food. However, I do suggest buying a bit of the food there as the on-site vendors have delicious food (alot of people say its the BEST airshow food). As you can tell, I just absolutely love this event and working with my team and the BCBALLOONS team while there.....it is SO much fun. (Who Knew that it'd be so much fun to work? haha)
This year, the event crew aimed for something different, and I'm sure that in the end it'll maximize their profit. First off, the event is now operating on a lower budget compared to previous years...but with the action packed line-up of events they have, you would've never guessed that if I didn't tell you. They did dump some of the events that have popped up over the past few years and that seemed like would stay with the event forever, but they did also keep some of the same ones. For example, the Monster Truck Rides from "Sudden Impact" will happen again this year, and the Virtual Army Experience will be back also. The BMX & Motorcycle Stunt Shows however have been dropped, but this doesnt mean something "exciting" isnt picked up. On July 4th, a Twilight Airshow & a Night Airshow will take place, it'll be the first one since 2004 at the event, and I'm sure it will become a mainstay at the event. Along with that, the traditional world-class airshow will take place again this year on the 4th & 5th of July. Over the years, this show has taken a more direct focus on aerobatics and the "best-of-the-best". Well, theres no doubt that the "best-of-the-best" will still be in town....but the focus isnt really aerobatics anymore. Nope, 2009 will show a new "frontier" for the Field of Flight. Alot of the civilian acts this year consist of warbirds, specialty acts & even powerless flight. You can add this in with the sheer power of the modern military with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet & the F-15E Strike Eagle. It'll be a blast....and CenterStage Entertainment, Kids Day, the Fireworks, the Balloon Illumes and of course the Balloon Launches that made the event famous will remain on the schedule.
Recently, the event, who got outstanding support from the 110th Fighter Wing of the National Guard who flew A-10 Thunderbolt II's, had to deal with a transition. The A-10s are no longer stationed at W.K, but instead are stationed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base on the other side of the state. C-21 cargo aircraft are now stationed at the ANG Base at Kellogg. We'll see how they support the event this year. (I'm sure they're supporting it but what I mean by support is if they'll give aerial support or not).
So if you want a blast of a time, stop by the event (which runs July 1st-5th). It's a VERY reasonably priced family event- July 1st & 2nd, Event admission is $5 with $5 parking (and kids under 4 feet tall get in FREE). July 3rd, 4th & 5th, admission is $10, Parking $5 (and kids under 4 feet tall get in FREE again)(And on July 3rd, if you're looking for a special deal, bring any Kelloggs Cereal Box Top (12oz or larger) then you receive $1.00 of admission (limit of 3 per person for a total of $3 off). And on the 4th & 5th, if you enter the gates after 5:30 PM, then its only $5 per person. And admission includes a variety of things on the event grounds, you'll have access to the world-class vendors, all the activities that are going on that day (ranging from the airshows, to the concerts, balloon launches and everything). The only extra-charge attractions are listed, such as the Carnival (which operates on Ride Tickets like traditional fairs), and the monster truck rides.
So come check out the 2009 event, we hope to see you there!!
Signed,
The 2009 ARCP Aerial Production Crew.
